Sulzfeld

view of sulzfeldWe found Sulzfeld because Dieter Oberst of the Europrez group selected it as a meeting point on our way to the EP 9 meeting. While the notion of having the meter long bratwurst was definitely a unique experience in this town, there are other attributes of the this small town that make it an enjoyable place to visit. The view from the road that goes by the town (above) we got our first glimpse of this walled town, complete with enclosing wall and guard towers.

oldest house + church sulzfeldO n c e in si d e t he walled town, we found a maze of cobbled streets and small well-kept houses. At the top of the hill in town stood the church., next to the oldest house in Sulzfeld (photo at left). The house is the Winzerhäusle (the small house of the Vintner) and was built in 1500. The green house barely visible at the left was once a cloister but is now owned by the Vintner. It was very nice that the buildings of historical importance had plaques on them that provided information like this so we knew what the relationship of the building was to the history of the town.

tower window sulzfeldIt only takes about a half hour to completely walk through the town and in doing so, we found the town to be mostly residential, with the one hotel we were staying at and a restaurant at the other end of town that also serves meter-long bratwurst, a bakery, the winery, and the market square. This is not a tourist town, which makes it all the more enjoyable for a brief stay. It is obvious to us that the residents here take great deal of pride in their town and spend the time and energy to make their heritage part of their everyday life. Even one of the old watch towers (right) is in use as living quarters, complete with geraniums on the window ledge. Wouldn’t it be nice to have some place like this to call home!

One of the houses near the gate has a picture painted on it, depicting Sulzfeld and the life here (left). The painting has a saying that we believe expresses the view of the people who live here. They are proud of their heritage, their wine, and enjoy their life here. We think it is a pretty nice sentiment.

Roughly translated (thanks to Sascha Leitz) it says:

Sulzfeld is very old and small
We live well here and the wine is good.
And there is more ...
That is as it is and should be so for ever!.

sven-erik-half-meter-sulzfeAs we mentioned before, the real claim to fame of this town is the meter-long bratwurst. So, of course, many of us at dinner enjoyed this delicacy. At right is Sven-Erik showing off his half-meter with Ingemar looking on incredulously. The sausages are actually served in 2 half-meter-long pieces and the other piece is still on his plate, encircling the generous pile of sauerkraut. Luckily the sausages are rather thin, so even though you get a meter’s worth, it is not so much that you cannot eat it all (we seem to remember that everyone cleaned their plates). The food was excellent and the beer plentiful, so an enjoyable evening was spent by all who joined us for the outing.

The next morning we were off early, heading north to the Netherlands. But before everyone got packed, we got a picture of the 10 bikes having bikes sulzfeldtaken over much of the hotel’s parking lot (right). Notice how our pack-horse bikes are surrounded by the sportier bikes? Oh, to travel light again. Sigh.
