Our first visit to Kauai was in November, 2003 as we were sailing through the Hawaiian islands on the cruise ship Infinity. We arrived in the port of Nawiliwili early in the morning, just as the sun was rising. The picture below was taken as we were docking at about 7 in the morning.
We had a day in Kauai and decided to rent a car in order to drive to the Waimea Canyon. It took us about an hour to drive there from the port of Nawiliwili, but was well worth the drive. The canyon is long and narrow, with one road providing access. There are many areas along the way to stop and take pictures. Below is a panorama of the canyon where you can see the beautiful variations of color.
As there are many stops along the way, you can get very different views of the same canyon. Like most canyons, there is a river at the bottom, much smaller than it once was. But this closer up photo helps define the area better. While very rocky, it is also very lush and green.

When we stopped at one of the viewpoints, there were several wild chickens roaming around. The cocks were quite colorful, as you can see.

As we pulled out of Nawiliwili, we got a great view of the coast (above), with the golf course right on the cliffs. It is understandable why Kauai is often referred to as the Garden Island.
