The Republic of Panama was was created when the French began construction of the Panama Canal in 1880 and Columbia lost its most valuable territory - the Isthmus of Panama. We cruised through the Panama Canal twice in the months of April and May, 2003, while on Celebrity Cruise Lines ship Infinity.The Bridge of the Americas, above, is the only link between Central and South America over which vehicles can travel. It really is a bit of a “lie” to say that because there are no roads south through the jungle. The few travelers that we are familiar with who actually tokk a vehicle through the jungle said they would never do it again and it is a miracle they made it out of the jungle alive. The bridge is the first thing that ships entering the canal from the Pacific Ocean encounter, just prior to reaching the Miraflores Locks.
