Niagra Falls

niagra over the edgeSlowly I turned, step by step, and then I grabbed him!” Jim is doomed to think of the great Abbot and Costello comedy routine from their days in Vaudeville for as long as he lives. Niagara Falls. This is also the place where we consumed the wonderful La Grand Dame Champagne we bought at duty free with Sun Chips and cheese!

What is it about running water that we all seem to be so attracted to? It really is quite strange. In May of 2000 we returned to the US by flying our bikes and ourselves into Toronto, Canada from Amsterdam. From there it was just a short drive to Niagara Falls.

american fallsThe falls are really quite spectacular and we think that they are best viewed from the Canadian side of the border. For those who may not know, the falls are located on the border between the U.S. and Canada and you have the option of viewing from either side. The Canadian side is much more picturesque and spectacular in our opinion. Above is Horseshoe Falls as seen from the Canadian side.

At left is American Falls (also from the Canadian side) with one of the tour boats you can take a ride in pictured to the lower right of the falls, called “The Maid of the Mist”. These little boats chug their way up to the base of the falls pictured above. We’ll leave it to you to get the specifics about liters per second over the edge and all the other impressive statistics. We are in awe from just looking at the sheer power this water produces. To think that people have actually floated over the edge in barrels!
