Glasgow

georges square glasgowWe had a brief visit to Glasgow, only long enough to take the tour bus around town, so I’m sure we didn’t do it justice. There were many lovely Victorian Houses in the old neighborhoods; we saw John Smith & Son’s store, the oldest business in Glasgow, established in 1751; and glimpsed the High Court where the Lockerbie bombers would have been tried, if the trial were held in Scotland. Standing in George Square (above), we found that the statue of King George was removed after the American Revolution—when the colonies won their freedom from England, Glasgow lost its important tobacco trade and blamed the king. His statue was replaced with one of Sir Walter Scott; however, the square remains in George’s name. There are many outstanding art galleries and museums in Glasgow, but time was not available to travel through them, which was a shame as all museums operated by the City of Glasgow are free of charge. Also, there is excellent shopping in Glasgow—so good, in fact, that people fly down from Iceland to do their Christmas shopping . The cost of goods is sufficiently less than in Iceland that it more than compensates for the cost of airfare and accommodations.Unfortunately, after visiting Edinburgh, Glasgow seemed a bit of a disappointment (sorry!).
