Giants Causeway

giants causewayThe Giants Causeway is on the northern coast of Northern Ireland. It is a very strange phenomenon of 6-sided rock thrust from the earth’s giants causeway jettycrust (right) - we’ve heard that there are 37,000 of these columns, but we didn’t actually count them ourselves to be sure.. It is quite unusual and a great place to just wander around and wonder at it all. Below right is a photo of the massive vertical columns, with Jim standing at the base to get an idea of the size.

At left, the rocks appear as pavers where they have been worn down to the same height. Legend has ijim at giants causewayt that a giant, Finn McCool, fancied a female giant on the Scottish island of Staffa and built the stepping stones to the island (where we are told there are these rock formations as well). However, the scientific explanation is that these formations were the result of a lava flow from an underground fissure some 60 million years ago. Who are you going to believe???

You can scramble all over the rock as you wish, though they do get a bit slippery in the rain.
