Piran

One of the nicest towns on the Slovenian coast is Piran which has lots of Venetian Gothic Architecture and narrow streets. The town is located at the end of a peninsula and is heavily visited by tourists.

One of the main attractions in Piran is the tall tower of the Church of St. George that sits high on a ridge above the sea. The church is being restored.

The outside has been completed but the interior is closed because of the work that is going on inside. As a result we missed a chance to see the frescoes on the walls and the marble altars and, more importantly, the statue of George slaying the dragon!

The bell tower (above right) stands alone as a structure itself and is modeled on the campanile of San Marcos in Venice, Italy. The tower was completed in 1609. The bell was made in 1477 and is the oldest in the region.

Here’s a view of one of the numerous narrow streets found in the town - this one is on the way up the hill to the church.

We had lunch while we were here at a nice little restaurant that had seating adjacent to the Adriatic Sea - nothing like fresh muscles and a salad for lunch!
