Troms

Troms is the area north of Nordland and south of Finnmark, well into the region of the Arctic Circle. We entered Troms as we were leaving the Vesteralen Islands on the ferry from Andenes to Gryllefjord. We had spent the night near Gryllefjord, but the clouds were down on the the deck and there wasn’t much of photographic interest.

The next day we drove to Tromso so we could buy some spark plugs at the BMW dealer. The town itself pretty much covers the island and is a major port for the coastal ferries. To get to the town you have to drive over a tall bridge, which we later walked up to take a few pictures. The photo at left is from the bridge, looking down over the town center and the pleasure harbor.  The snowy mountains in the background are actually the next island to the west.

Looking the other direction (east), the bridge overlooks a modern church in the town of Tromsdals (below left). The mountain behind has a couple of ski runs that appear to be virtually straight and vertical. Evidently most of the ski areas up here a lit with floodlights as the polar night lasts from about late November to late January. So if you want to ski in the middle of winter, you are going to do it at “night.”

Driving back to the main highway, we made a couple of ferry hops. The picture at above right is the coast as we neared the port in Olderdalen. the clouds were quite low and snaking around the lower peaks. But the crossing was smooth and not raining

Below the bikes on the ferry as we approach the port in Olderdalen.
