Luxembourg

luxembourg_sm02The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is considered by many as a tax shelter for financial institutions. Due to its strategic location Luxembourg has been a stepping stone to other locations for centuries. It is nicknamed the “Gibraltar of the north”. Luxembourg is a constitutional monarchy.

Independence was achieved 1839 when the area was split between Belgium and the Netherlands with the Dutch portion becoming what it is today know as Luxembourg.

Located between Belgium, Germany and France the Duchy is quite small - 82 km long and 57 km wide. The northern portion is forested (the Ardennes highlands in the north) and agricultural and mining in the south. We think that the entire area of Luxembourg is very pretty and has some great motorcycling roads.

For years the area survived due to its rich iron-ore deposits. When this industry declined in the 1970’s the banking and insurance industries and favorable taxation laws are its main stays today.

With fuel prices being among the cheapest in Europe everyone who drives in the area manages to include Luxembourg in their itinerary and stops for a fill up. Unfortunately, all we have done in Luxembourg (as of January 2002) is what most other Europeans have done when in the Duchy - drive through and stop for fuel.
